Tracking Laptops with RFID

Keeping track of laptops is serious business. The hard part about tracking laptops is the near-metal RF challenge. Traditional RFID tags don’t work well because the metal interferes with their antenna. We have used hard RFID tags (NOX-TM7 and NOX-TM9LR’s) for a while but they are big and bulky.

Today, Alison looks at a new RFID Tracking tag from Omni-ID. The IQ400 and IQ600 are soft, flexible, work on / near metal, and can be printed/programmed in an RFID printer. This helps lower the cost (and the RFID Tag profile) so you can fit RFID tags more easily where you need them and create tags on-demand. The IQ’s are also super-slim (about credit card width) so they don’t protrude from laptops.

Of course, once you have the tags — you need software to track it all. Our Nox software will track your laptops (and, match them to employee badges) to make sure you can keep track of everything.
